Area: Damage localization through ambient signatures

Structural health monitoring refers to the process of implementing a strategy of damage detection and characterization. Here, the damage can be considered as a change in the material properties and/or connectivity in the structural system. The structure under consideration is monitored through deployment of an array of sensors (generally, but not limited to, the accelerometers), followed by the extraction of damage sensitive features and their statistical analysis. This enables an assessment on the present health of the structure using an ‘output only’ framework. Our research focuses on developing a novel framework (in time as well as frequency domains) for the detection, localization and quantification of the damage present at the multiple locations by conducting experiments on a laboratory-scale 3D frame structure under ambient vibrations.
